What the carbon block description tells a buyer
A carbon block uses activated carbon in a formed porous structure. Granular activated carbon uses discrete particles. These descriptions identify different media forms; neither is a complete performance rating. The EPA describes activated carbon as an adsorption medium with a large internal surface area and explains that treatment capacity varies with carbon properties and manufacturing. Its drinking water treatment overview provides useful background, not a test report for a refrigerator cartridge.
FridgeFilt's confirmed filter media is Coconut Shell Activated Carbon Block, with Food Grade Plastic Housing. Coconut shell identifies the carbon feedstock, while the housing describes the cartridge enclosure. These facts do not establish every possible contaminant reduction claim, an identical pore structure across products or a particular finished-filter certification. Ask how the selected cartridge's configuration and supporting information relate to the claims you want to publish.
Separate adsorption, particle retention and housing fit
Adsorption involves interactions at the carbon surface. Particle retention concerns material passing through the filter structure, while housing fit concerns the mechanical connection and seals. These functions must be evaluated separately. A fine micron statement does not, by itself, establish a dissolved contaminant reduction claim. Likewise, a cartridge that connects correctly is not thereby proven to achieve a specific chemical reduction or stated capacity.
Ask the supplier what the micron description means and which method supports it. If a value is described as nominal or absolute, obtain the definition and test basis being used instead of assuming the words are interchangeable. Do not turn a particle rating into a claim about lead, microorganisms or every chemical in the water. The certification guide explains how to check the relevant claim and product scope.
Read capacity with its test conditions
A capacity number is meaningful when the target claim and operating conditions are known. Ask which reduction endpoint the capacity refers to, the incoming water conditions and the applicable flow. A supplier's stated gallon capacity should not be interpreted as an identical capacity for every possible substance. Published figures from a different model, media formulation or application cannot fill a gap in the documentation for your proposed cartridge.
Pentair's coconut-based carbon block cartridge sheet illustrates the practice of publishing model-specific flow, capacity and pressure-drop information together. Those are Pentair cartridge specifications, not FridgeFilt refrigerator filter ratings. The useful purchasing lesson is the format: retain the conditions alongside the figure, and compare equivalent records rather than extracting a single attractive number from unrelated products.
Understand 300 gallons and six months as different limits
FridgeFilt's current published product information states a capacity of 300 gallons and a service life of six months. This is information to confirm for the chosen configuration, not a claim that every SKU has independently passed an identical set of finished-cartridge tests. A volume figure and a calendar interval answer different questions. Usage, incoming water and the applicable product instructions affect the replacement decision.
For planning only, 300 US gallons is approximately 1,136 litres. At an assumed use of two US gallons per day, that volume would be reached in 150 days. This arithmetic is not a service-life test or a recommendation to extend an interval: actual use and product-specific instructions remain relevant. State the unit convention when comparing documents, especially where a UK buyer uses litres and a source document simply says gallons.
A distributor can use both time and volume in reorder planning without promising universal life. Ask customers for the installed base and their replacement policy, then distinguish stock forecasting from a technical performance guarantee. Do not promise that a six-month reminder proves available contaminant reduction capacity, or that low consumption automatically permits keeping a cartridge installed beyond the selected model's instructions.
Compare flow and pressure difference as a pair
Flow is a rate, while pressure difference describes the change across the tested configuration. To compare samples fairly, record inlet and outlet conditions, temperature, flushing state and any filter head or restrictor. A stated supply pressure alone may not describe the pressure difference across the cartridge. Differences in the test setup can change the result even when both suppliers report the same flow unit.
A typical value displayed for an industry design is not a measured result for your purchase. FridgeFilt product pages separate typical operating references from formal specifications. Keep that separation in your own brief. If a particular flow, pressure or temperature limit is required, ask for confirmation for the exact model and configuration. Do not substitute a website reference table for installation instructions or a model-specific operating rating.
Normalize units before comparing documents
For arithmetic illustration, 0.5 US gallons per minute is approximately 1.89 litres per minute. If a document pairs a different litre value with the same US-gallon rate, ask which figure and convention are intended before ranking samples. This calculation does not assign that flow to a FridgeFilt model. Keep original units and conversions in separate fields, identify whether gallons are US or imperial, and retain the test conditions with both. Unit reconciliation can reveal a documentation issue before it becomes an incorrect packaging claim or purchase requirement.
Use a specification comparison that exposes missing evidence
| Parameter | Read alongside it | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Media | Formulation identity and cartridge configuration. | Feedstock alone proves performance. |
| Capacity | Claim, units, flow and test conditions. | One number applies to all contaminants. |
| Service interval | Product instructions and actual usage. | A calendar interval is a test result. |
| Flow | Pressure difference, temperature and setup. | All quoted rates are directly comparable. |
| Certification | Listed object, exact model and scope. | A certified block certifies the housing assembly. |
Mark an unresolved cell as a question for review, rather than filling it with a competitor's value. This keeps the request honest and lets the supplier distinguish a required performance target from a field that merely needs explanation. Agreement on a target is still separate from evidence that the selected sample or finished configuration meets it.
Connect media review to quality control and compatibility
FridgeFilt's confirmed checks include incoming materials, carbon blocks, leakage, flow and packaging. A leakage check supports a sealing review; it does not replace performance evidence for a reduction claim. Ask for the method and conditions appropriate to the order. Keep the approved configuration and inspection requirements together so a later housing, seal or media change can be reviewed against the same purchasing record.
Start a model-specific discussion with a record such as the MWF-compatible refrigerator filter. Use the compatibility guide to establish the connection and application, then the manufacturer audit checklist to organize evidence. A material description, fit decision and inspection record are complementary pieces of the review, not substitutes for one another.
Write the technical questions into your RFQ
Include the exact filter reference, intended market, quantity and packaging, followed by the parameters and claims you need confirmed. Distinguish published data from required operating targets and any additional evidence request. FridgeFilt provides OEM and private label support, with private label orders starting from 1,000 pcs. Custom branding does not automatically alter a cartridge's operating specification or expand its certification scope.
The confirmed certification statement is limited to the carbon block component according to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 372 requirements. It must not be presented as complete-filter certification. Send a model-specific technical inquiry with the open questions attached. A coordinated specification helps both parties decide what can be quoted, what the sample should represent and which claims can responsibly appear in the final product literature.
